 HISTORY

Wahbung Abinoonjiiag is a domestic violence prevention, crisis and healing centre, established in 1994 to empower children and their families to end the cycle of violence. Wahbung Abinoonjiiag (Children of Tomorrow) is an Indigenous non-profit organization, providing opportunities for holistic healing and support for families to thrive through culturally-relevant programs, services and advocacy. Our dynamic team of staff and volunteers deliver programs and services for children, youth, individuals and families who have been impacted by violence.

purpose

Our programming is directed by the expressed needs of the community, gathered through our community councils, community connection initiatives and inclusive strategic planning. Program and community engagement opportunities include: children’s programs (Little Ones and Caregivers, Traditional Parenting and Summer Camp); youth programs (Junior Youth Group, Senior Youth Group and mentorship opportunities), adult programs (Women’s Circle, Addictions Relapse Prevention Program and counselling); cultural activities/programs (ceremonies, Traditional artisan workshops and cultural support services); housing advocacy and life-skills development through The Loving Roof housing program; wrap-around family support programming through our Community Helper program; and basic needs services through our COVID-19 community care package initiative.

Wahbung Abinoonjiiag owns/operates an emergency shelter program for male-identifying individuals and their families, along with transitional housing for children and their families who are at-risk or experiencing family violence. A new 26-unit (80 bedroom) transitional housing facility is underway with an expected occupancy date for tenant families in spring 2023. Wahbung Abinoonjiiag is also in the process of finalizing a separate entity to sponsor management agreement with Manitoba Housing to operate 50-units of long-term housing solutions for families who have experienced violence.

Each year, more than 1,500 community members connect with Wahbung Abinoonjiiag and allow us to walk with them on their healing journey. Wahbung Abinoonjiiag provides a safe and supportive family environment for individuals and families to access support and programming including: 5,000 programming hours; ten weeks of summer day camp for young people; counselling, advocacy and referrals; capacity building and volunteer opportunities; COVID-19 basic needs support services; domestic violence awareness workshops; and, many other community-driven special events and partnerships.
